Bethany Economos is a mixed media artist whose work is often influenced by her surroundings and current events. Her background in Fiber Arts (BFA Tyler School of Art 2001) shows in the hand embroidered stitching and the other surface design techniques.
“I use embroidery, beading, and other hand embellishment techniques in my mixed media works. Keeping these techniques alive and passing them on to the next generation is essential to my work. My newest work explores the concept of ‘women’s work’ and the ‘feminine arts’. These craft forms have been systemically deemed lowly compared to their male equivalents.” explains Bethany Economos “I aim to push the boundaries of these engrained perceptions and reframe this stereotype.”
The the first Covid shutdown in 2020 (and lack of art supplies) led her to explore the incorporation of upcycled materials and unconventional items into her latest works. This “make do and mend” attitude has positively impacted her life and her work.
